The objective of this study was to examine the effects of Tithonia diversifolia as a supplementary forage on dairy cow performance and methane production. Nine lactating Holstein × Zebu dairy cows (519 ± 53.3 kg of body weight and 66 ± 13.3 d in milk) were paired by milk yield (21.3 ± 2.34 kg/d) and body weight and randomly assigned to three dietary treatments in a Latin square design with 21-d experimental periods (14 d for diet adaptation and 7 d for measurements and sample collection). The dietary treatments included the control diet consisting of fresh sugar cane plus concentrate (44:56, % of diet DM), and two treatment diets containing different levels of fresh T. diversifolia (6.5 and 15.4%, DM basis) which partially replaced both sugarcane and concentrates. Methane production was measured using the sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) technique from d 16 to d 21 of each experimental period. Analysis of the gas samples was performed by gas chromatography. The inclusion of T. diversifolia at 15.4% DM had no effects on DM intake, milk production, nitrogen balance or methane production. There was no effect on the concentrations of total saturated fatty acids (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in milk fat (P ≥ 0.28), though individual milk fatty acids were affected. Serum concentrations of glucose, urea nitrogen (BUN), triglycerides, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), and cholesterol were unaffected by the dietary treatments (P ≥ 0.13). There was a time (2 and 6 h post-feeding) and dietary treatment effect (P < 0.01) on the acetate to propionate ratio in the rumen. A denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis of the archaeal community showed distinct clustering of the archaea populations for control and treatment diets. Taken together, our results indicate the potential of T. diversifolia as a supplementary forage for dairy cattle in the tropics.

Weeds are known to grow around different types of crops, where they tend to compete with other plants and cause problems in agricultural production; therefore, a study on floristic composition and diversity of 12 farms was conducted. 4 of these farms had a conventional production purpose (Group 1), 4 more were transitioning to organic (Group 2), and the remaining 4 were oriented towards organic production (Group 3). Farms were located in the province of Sumapaz (Colombia) and distributed across three Life Zones, such as: Premontane Rainforest (PMRF), Low Montane Rainforest (LMRF) and Montane Rainforest (MRF). For specimen collection purposes, a restricted random sampling method was performed. Growers were surveyed to obtain more information on the use of the species identified. Diversity was calculated by using Margalef"s index, Simpson"s index and Shannon-Wiener"s index, along with PAST 2.17, a statistical program. A total of 96 species were listed and distributed among 38 families. The most abundant species were Pennisetum clandestinum in (MRF), (LMRF) and Cynodon plectostachius in (PMRF). The greatest diversity of weeds was obtained in Groups 2 and 3. Different uses of weeds were identified mainly in the fields of animal nutrition and soil improvement through green fertilizers.

Little is known about the agronomic aspects of Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia), in spite of its potential for multiple uses. In this study, we evaluated the effects of application rates of biofertilizer and irrigation on yield, growth, and leaf chlorophyll and nutrient content of Mexican Sunflower. In an experiment in the Brazilian semi-arid region, we used a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement, consisting of five application rates of biofertilizer (0, 40, 80, 120, and 160 m3 ha-1), with and without irrigation. The statistical design was randomized blocks with three replications. Irrigated plants of Mexican Sunflower had greater dry and fresh matter yields, greater height, and greater leaf area index and leaf contents of K, Zn, and B. However, the high concentration of bicarbonate in the irrigation water reduced the leaf contents of N, Ca, S, Fe, and Mn. The mean increase in the two cuttings obtained with the use of irrigation was 350% and 314% for fresh and dry matter, respectively. The increase in the biofertilizer application increased the leaf chlorophyll contents of irrigated plants; however, it did not result in production or nutritional gains. In regions with low availability of rainfall, irrigated cultivation of Mexican Sunflower is recommended.
