Effects of different levels of Biomin® IMBO synbiotic, including Enterococcus faecium (as probiotic), and fructooligosaccharides (as prebiotic) on survival, growth performance, and digestive enzyme activities of common carp fingerlings (Cyprinus carpio) were evaluated. The experiment was carried out in four treatments (each with 3 replicates), including T1 = control with non-synbiotic diet, T2 = 0.5 g/kg synbiotic diet, T3 = 1 g/kg synbiotic diet, and T4 = 1.5 g/kg synbiotic diet. In total 300 fish with an average weight of 10 ± 1 g were distributed in 12 tanks (25 animals per 300 l) and were fed experimental diets over a period of 60 days. The results showed that synbiotic could significantly enhance growth parameters (weight gain, length gain, specific growth rate, percentage weight gain) (P < 0.05), but did not exhibit any effect on survival rate (P > 0.05) compared with the control. An assay of the digestive enzyme activities demonstrated that the trypsin and chymotrypsin activities of synbiotic groups were considerably increased than those in the control (P < 0.05), but there was no significant difference in the levels of α-amylase, lipase, or alkaline phosphatase (P > 0.05). This study indicated that different levels of synbiotic have the capability to enhance probiotic substitution, to improve digestive enzyme activity which leads to digestive system efficiency, and finally to increase growth. It seems that the studied synbiotic could serve as a good diet supplement for common carp cultures.

Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da suplementação de rações, com prebiótico (mananoligossacarídeo), probiótico (Bacillus subtilis) e simbiótico, em juvenis de tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), em duas densidades de estocagem, quanto aos parâmetros de crescimento, utilização do alimento, sobrevivência e econômicos. Um total de 192 juvenis (2,4±0,2 g) foi distribuído em 32 aquários (20 L), em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 2x4, com quatro repetições, durante oito semanas. Testaram-se 0,35 e 1,05 kg m -3 para a densidade de estocagem. A suplementação constituiu-se de: 2 g kg -1 de prebiótico; 2 g kg -1 de probiótico; 2 g kg -1 de prebiótico + 2 g kg -1 de probiótico; e controle. A densidade de estocagem não influenciou a sobrevivência dos peixes, embora tenha causado a redução dos parâmetros econômicos e de crescimento. A suplementação com probiótico e simbiótico aumentou o crescimento, melhorou a utilização do alimento e os parâmetros econômicos. A ração controle apresentou o menor índice de eficiência econômica, enquanto o maior índice foi obtido pelas rações suplementadas com simbiótico. Os parâmetros de crescimento, utilização do alimento e econômicos aumentaram com a suplementação com probiótico e simbiótico, em rações para juvenis de tambaqui, embora não haja efeito sinergístico entre o prebiótico e o probiótico avaliados.Termos para indexação: Bacillus subtilis, Colossoma macropomum, mananoligossacarídeo. The control diet showed the lowest economic efficiency index, while the highest index was obtained by diets supplemented with synbiotic. Growth, food utilization, and economic parameters increased with the probiotic and synbiotic supplementation in diets for juvenile tambaquis, although there is no synergistic effect between the evaluated prebiotic and probiotic supplementations.

Crustacean aquaculture, and more specifically shrimp culture, faces several challenges in order to increase production yield while maintaining sustainability. The various disease outbreaks that have been continuously affecting the sector for almost two decades, together with the increasing demand for environmentally friendly aquaculture and the pressure from customers for safe and traceable products, are fundamentally modifying the culture practices of shrimp and other crustacean species. It is today well accepted that these challenges can only be faced through the development of better management practices together with technical innovations. Among the solutions currently considered, those relying on nutrition and intestinal health management can play a critical role. The application of probiotics in aquaculture has been developed in this context and is now widely applied in crustacean aquaculture as a complementary tool for management of disease. This development is mostly driven by practical and empirical approaches in shrimp farming; however, specific in-depth studies related to the biological effects and mechanisms of action of probiotics in crustaceans are gaining more importance. This chapter presents a review of the research conducted on probiotic applications in crustacean species with special emphasis on the modes of action investigated so far and the main benefits derived from it. The limits and future perspectives are also addressed.
