Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the most consumed fresh vegetables in the United States. However, lettuce production is heavily limited to California and Arizona, posing a high risk to the supply chain. Hydroponic production is a soilless cultivation method and provides a sustainable alternative to growing lettuce in the field. Light is a critical factor in plant development, and light quality highly affects plant morphogenesis. The goals of this study were 2-fold, with the first to investigate the growth of 26 lettuce cultivars under a hydroponic system supplemented with fluorescent light to determine adaptability. Subsequently, the second goal was to determine how light-emitting diodes (LEDs) affect lettuce plant morphology and photosynthesis compared with fluorescent light for four lettuce cultivars. Results showed that 23 of 26 lettuce cultivars were grown successfully using a hydroponic system. However, lettuce grown under fluorescent light experienced stem elongation—a morphological response to low-light conditions known as shade avoidance syndrome. Stem elongation decreased significantly under LED light, whereas other morphological characteristics remained relatively the same between the two light treatments. Although there were no differences in dry weight and leaf area, the carbon assimilation rate increased significantly in lettuce cultivars Coastal Star, Muir, Green Butter, and Rouge d’Hiver when treated with LED light. Correspondingly, intercellular carbon dioxide (CO2) decreased in these four lettuce cultivars under the LED light treatment. Our study results indicate that LED light increased photosynthetic activity and reduced stem elongation to enhanced lettuce quality.

Hydroponic system applications can help alleviate problems caused by changes in agricultural land usage. Many hydroponic researches have been carried out growing different plants, however their applicability in Sindh Pakistan requires some amendment. The research was conducted at Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam to build and analyse a hydroponic structure with a continuous nutrition system for cultivation of tomato. PVC pipes were used to construct the hydroponic system. Tomato plants were grown in hydroponic cups after transplanting for 15 days. The result revealed that EC and pH of water ranged between 1.23 to 2.76 dS/m and 5.32 to 6.92 respectively. The temperature of water varied between 18 to 24 ºC with an average value of 21 ºC. Ambient temperature and solar radiations varied between 21 to 26 ºC and 250 to 325 W/m 2 respectively. Number of leaves per plant increased from 6 to 22 in 28 days after transplantation, and plant height increased from 15 to 32 cm. The total cost of construction of the hydroponic structure was 11,889/ PKR. The constructed hydroponic system proved to be a suitable technology for growing tomatoes in a protected environment with minimal space, fertilizer and water requirements.

A Visual Method of Hydroponic Lettuces Height and Leaves Expansion Size Measurement for Intelligent Harvesting

Harvesting is an important procedure for hydroponic lettuces in plant factories. At present, hydroponic lettuces are mainly harvested manually, and the key difficulty in mechanical harvesting is reducing the occurrence of leaf injury. Measuring the size of hydroponic lettuces using the image processing method and intelligently adjusting the operating parameters of the harvesting device are the foundation of high-quality harvesting for lettuces. The overlapped leaves of adjacent hydroponic lettuces cause difficulties in measuring lettuce size, especially the leaves expansion size. Therefore, we proposed an image processing method for measuring lettuce height and leaves expansion size according to the upper contour feature of lettuces and an image included three lettuces. Firstly, the upper contours of the lettuces were extracted and segmented via image preprocessing. Secondly, lettuce height was measured according to the maximum ordinate of the contour. Lastly, the lettuce’s upper contour was fitted to a function to measure the leaves expansion size. The measurement results showed that the maximal relative error of the lettuce height measurements was 5.58%, and the average was 2.14%. The effect of the quadratic function in fitting the upper contour was the best compared with the cubic function and sine function. The maximal relative error of the leaves expansion size measurements was 8.59%, and the average was 4.03%. According to the results of the lettuce height and leaves expansion size measurements, the grabbing parameters of each lettuce were intelligently adjusted to verify the harvesting effect. The harvesting success rates of lettuces was above 90%, and the injured leaves areas of the left, middle, and right lettuces in each image were 192.6 mm2, 228.1 mm2, and 205.6 mm2, respectively. This paper provides a reference for the design and improvement of intelligent harvesters for hydroponic lettuces.
