Effect of Electroacupuncture on Natural-Killer Cells and Tumor Size in Patients with Cervical Squamous-Cell Carcinoma: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Background: A natural-killer (NK) cell is a cytotoxic lymphocyte that responds to tumor formation. Electroacupuncture (EA) in patients with cancer, who had chemotherapy, enabled them to maintain their T-cell counts (CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+) and NK-cell activity. Objective: To evaluate NK-cell levels and tumor sizes in patients with cervical squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) after EA on ST 36 (Zusanli). Design: This study was a randomized, experimental clinical study with a pre-post-test, control group design. Setting… Show more

“…They showed how EA increases the number of NK cells in peripheral blood, infiltrates the tumour, and increases granzyme B and perforin in the tumour tissue. These findings suggest that EA could be a complementary alternative in cancer treatment, however, more studies are required [93][94][95].…”

“…Of those, 65 of 94 publications (69.1%) were included in the qualitative analysis because they reported at least 1 type of AE, 15 (16%) did not report any type of safety-related data, [108][109][110][111][112][113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121][122] and 14 (14.9%) had insufficient or contradictory data. 118,[123][124][125][126][127][128][129][130][131][132][133][134][135] Only 14 studies (14.9%) reported data on all 4 categories of AEs. Three studies concerning crossover trials reported insufficient data for inclusion in the meta-analyses.…”

“…One clinical trial indicated that after 4 cycles of chemotherapy on cervical squamous cell carcinoma at stages Ⅱb-шb, NK cells increased and tumor size reduced. 65 Another study added evidence to this discovery, reporting that NK cells were significantly associated with improved prognosis. 66…”
