Abstract-Technologies for EDM machining are demanded in many industrial fields. Graphite is widely used as electrode material in EDM. Graphite (Poco EDM-3) and copperinfiltrated-graphite (Poco EDM-C3) electrodes were used to compare the corresponding to EDM properties. The experiments were carried out on Ti6Al4V. Performance in respect to MRR and electrode wear is compared for two graphite qualities. The results show that EDM3 graphite performs very well giving significantly higher MRR than EDM-C3, and also with acceptable relative electrode wear. The surface roughness of workpiece produced by EDM-C3 is better than EDM-3 due to gap distance of EDM-C3 is larger than that produced by EDM-3. The two electrode materials give the same micro-hardness of the layers that are about 800 HV.

-Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a thermo-electrical based non-contact material removal process for machining of the electrically conductive difficult-to-machine materials. The machinability of the EDM process is not affected by mechanical and physical properties of the workpiece materials. Even though, its performances are highly affected by the tool materials and their designs. Most of the research papers refer to enhance the productivity of the EDM process without considering the effect of the parameters related to the tool electrodes. Generally, the tool wear is the well known phenomenon of the EDM process that affects the plasma formation as well as surface quality and productivity. The aim of the present study is to summarize a report on the published works related to the tool electrodes materials, designs and their effect on the performances of the EDM process. Instead of this, the present paper also focuses to future research scope in the same field and discussed in the brief.

Alumina is a non-conductive ceramic material which can meet the high demand of industrial applications due to its excellent physical and chemical properties. However, machining of alumina is not possible by using the conventional machining methods due to its inherent brittleness. Recently, electro-discharge machining has been used for structuring alumina with assisting electrode to initiate the spark between the conductive tool electrode and the non-conductive work piece material. However, the effects of process parameters on material removal rate and surface roughness have not been investigated to formulate mathematical models. This study dealt with developing models for material removal rate and surface roughness correlating three process parameters which are peak current, pulse-on time and gap voltage using response surface methodology. The models were verified with 7% error between the results of empirical models and the experimental values.
