Effect of Fasting Subjects’ Posture on 13C‐Urea Breath Test for Detection of Helicobacter pylori Infection

Abstract: These results suggest that posture and mouthwash affect delta 13C value at the 5- and 10-minute points. Sampling at 20 (maybe 15 or 30) minutes for fasting patients in a sitting position is considered to be appropriate for detection of H. pylori infection in a standard two-sampling-point 13C-urea breath test.

“…These differences might affect the sensitivity of each serological kit, as demonstrated by previous studies. 24,26 Although the diagnostic value of the UBT has been previously reported, [28][29][30][31][32] this test is very expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, the UBT should be used for the confirmation of successful eradication therapy, 8,10,44,48 while it seems not to be adequate for mass surveys for H. pylori infection in large numbers of subjects.…”

“…[8][9][10] For the urea breath test procedure, patients, in the sitting position, drank 30 ml of tap water containing 100 mg of 13 C-urea after a greater than 5-h fast. Mouth washing was done before and immediately after the dosage.…”

“…The urea breath test (UBT) is a simple, non‐invasive, reproducible and accurate method for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection 1–4 . This test is commonly used for the assessment of H. pylori infection, particularly after eradication therapy 5,6 .…”
