Effect of grip width on exercise volume in bench press with a controlled movement tempo in women

Abstract: Background:The bench press (BP) is a complex upper body exercise. Despite numerous scientific studies, it remains unknown which grip width is optimal for the development of strength and power in the bench press. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of different grip widths on exercise volume, evaluate the time under tension (TUT) and the number of repetitions (REP) completed during 5 consecutive sets of the BP. Material and methods:The study involved 16 women with a minimum of one year … Show more

“…However, various issues exist with conducting a 1RM test. Specifically, performing a 1RM test can be time consuming, unnecessarily fatiguing (Helms et al, 2018), and potentially unsafe for novice athletes who have not achieved technical proficiency in the compound movements (Niewiadomski et al, 2008;Gepfert et al, 2019). Furthermore, the above limitations are especially relevant when attempting to assess 1RM in large groups of athletes (American College of Sports Medicine, 2009).…”

“…It is also an individual sport discipline, with annual World and European Championships being organized (IPF, 2019). The bench press is also a basic resistance exercise for the upper body [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Depending on the structure of the movement, muscles with the highest involvement during the bench press movement include the anterior deltoid, pectoralis major, and triceps brachii [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”
