Effect of ground tire rubber on structural, mechanical and thermal properties of flexible polyurethane foams

Abstract: in the polyurethane/ground tire rubber foamed composites enhanced their cross-link density estimated from the swelling measurements. It was also confirmed by an increase of glass transition temperature measured by dynamic mechanical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Addition of ground tire rubber to polyurethane foams had very positive influence on their thermal stability measured by the temperature corresponding to the 2 % mass loss during degradation of material. Modification increased initial … Show more

“…2,3 Therefore, the quest for economical and environment-friendly methods that allow potential application of waste tires in industry is very reasonable. [4][5][6] At present, one of the effective industrial-scale methods for recycling of used tires is the reclaiming/ devulcanization of ground tire rubber (GTR). During the devulcanization process, the three-dimensional network of cross-linked rubber is destroyed by means of thermal, mechanical or chemical energy.…”

“…The use of crumb rubber in flexible polyurethane foams has a significant effect on the structure of the material, in which the density of cross-inking increases significantly. This increases the thermal stability of the material, where the decomposition temperature increased by 14 • C as compared with the sample without crumb rubber [77].…”

“…It is ascribed to the poor adhesion between untreated rubber and PU matrix. Piszczyk et al [70] also investigated the modification of PU foams by two kinds of GTR, untreated and thermo-mechanically reclaimed with the exception that the whole process were carried out using a co-rotating twin screw extruder. It was proven that usage of GTR as a filler in PU foams leads to improvement of the thermal stability and compressive strength.…”
