Effect of guava leaf and lemon extracts on postharvest quality and shelf life of banana cv. Sabri (Musa sapientum L.)

Abstract: Banana is a common and popular subtropical fruit worldwide. Its postharvest life is very short which causes difficulties in marketing and preserving banana at good condition. To find out a better solution of this problem, the current study was conducted during 2017 in the Horticulture Laboratory, Khulna University, Bangladesh, by following the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) of experiment. Harvested banana fruits, sabri (Musa sapientum L) were treated with guava leaf and lemon extracts at different concentr… Show more

“…Youryon and Supapvanich (2017) reported the TSS value of ripe banana as around 28˚Brix whereas the value increased to around 30˚Brix when bananas were over ripen. Increasing of TSS during storage was also found by Hossain and Iqbal (2016), Siddiqua et al (2018) and Tabassum et al (2018). Moreover, these researchers reported that the bananas treated with different extracts showed lower TSS increasing rate than the control as similar as found in this study.…”

“…The antimicrobial activity of the banana peel had an impact on lowering disease incidence and disease severity. Tabassum et al (2018), Hossain and Iqbal (2016) and Bagwan (2001) also reported the same observation in case of disease incidence and severity of banana samples with clear indication of better acceptability for treated samples than control.…”

“…In this sense, the application of some plant extracts can help preserve the fruit quality and improve their shelf life. In a recent investigation, the application of guava extracts (from leaves) and lemon on banana fruits (Musa sapientum L.) at post-harvest stage considerably improved the shelf life of the fruits (up to 8 days) compared to untreated fruits (only 4 days), having a positive effect on the conservation of the physicochemical characteristics of fruit during the storage time [55]. Utilization of plant extracts for disease management in both pre-and post-harvest stages can be another alternative to the use of chemical treatments, due to their effectiveness and eco-friendly characteristics.…”

“…Banana is considered as one of the finest fruits and the most important in terms of food value, food security, food availability and above all, it is a crop that has a positive impact on increasing household income and alleviating poverty (Fonsah et al, 2018). In addition, banana cultivation had positive impact on farmers' livelihood and it places a valuable position among the fruits of Bangladesh not only for its highest production but also for its increasing popularity to many farmers as an economic crop (Tabassum et al, 2018). In order to meet the demand for fruits and vegetables for the increasing population, the government of Bangladesh has given much more emphasis on year-round crop like banana cultivation to achieve overall selfsufficiency.…”
