Effect of Hot Pressing Modes on the Structure and Properties of an ‘Aluminum – Carbon Nanofibers’ Composite Material

Abstract: The possibility of fabricating 'aluminum -carbon nanofibers' compact materials by hot pressing at a pressure of 5 GPa and a temperature of 480 -980°C is studied. It is shown that aluminum carbide forms in the case of hot pressing above 720°C. The hardness of the hot-pressed aluminum -carbon nanofibers' composite material is 80% higher than that of pure aluminum at a satisfactory ductility.

“…Its thermal conductivity was 60 W/(m·K), that corresponds approximately to the value of the specimens with 1–2 wt.% CNF without mechanic activation. These low values are explained by the appearance of a thermal barrier at the interface and by the aluminum carbide formation [27]. Dilution of the composite powder with pure aluminum leads to a hardness decrease and a sharp thermal conductivity increase.…”

“…(Figure 6). However, the most accessible and widely used methods for obtaining metal matrix composites reinforced with MWCNTs are solid-phase methods of powder metallurgy (PM) [88,104,118,119]. A typical technological process of the PM method consists of the mixing of components and their consolidation.…”

“…Under the combined influence of temperature and pressure, the material is easily deformed, which contributes to the achievement of high density. Al-MWCNT composites were prepared by hot pressing powder mixtures at 520 • C and 25 MPa [118] with a holding time of more than 30 min. The authors of [123,124] obtained Al -MWCNT composites by ball-milling raw materials for different lengths of time.…”
