Effect of Hydrothermal Carbonization Parameters and Performance of Carbon Dioxide Adsorption on Pineapple Peel Waste Biochar

Abstract: Low-cost biochar adsorbents were prepared from pineapple peel waste (PPW) via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) for CO 2 capture. The effects of hydrothermal carbonization temperature, retention time, and heating rate were studied. The hydrochar samples were further carbonized to produce pineapple peel biochar adsorbents. The effects of CO 2 concentration in the feed, adsorption temperature, and feed flow rate on adsorption capacity were investigated in a fixed-bed column adsorption system. The experimental dat… Show more

“…Greenhouse gases emitted from fossil fuel combustion represent a major reason for global warming and the associated climate change [1,2]. Furthermore, the environment is negatively affected by the improper treatment of municipal wastes [3,4], agricultural wastes [5,6], and industrial wastes [7,8]. The same situation also applies to municipal and industrial wastewater [9,10].…”

“…[ 17 ] It is undoubtable that the investigation and optimization of process parameters of HTC can further improve the fuel properties of hydrochar. Hence, most recent studies have investigated the influence of temperature, [ 18 ] residence time, [ 19 ] and feedstock–water weight ratio. [ 20 ] Aside from these, catalyst type/dosage is another important factor affecting HTC of biomass [ 21 ] ; however, only one previous study has used acidic catalyst (i.e., boric acid, H 3 BO 3 ) in the HTC of acorn shell for hydrochar production.…”
