“…Superoxide reacts with nitric oxide to form peroxynitrite; so increased peroxynitrite suggests an endothelial deficiency of nitric oxide. Both of these deficiencies could be due to the infiltration of neutrophils because ROS inhibit prostacyclin synthase 25, 26 and superoxide specifically reacts with nitric oxide to form peroxynitrite. To evaluate the role of endothelial factors, we compared vascular response in endothelium intact and endothelium denuded vessels.…”

“…The imbalance between thromboxane and prostacyclin is most likely caused by oxidative stress, which is manifest in PIH by increased lipid peroxidation and decreased antioxidant protection 155. Abnormally increased lipid peroxides in the maternal plasma and the placenta could activate the COX enzyme to increase thromboxane synthesis,157 but at the same time, they inhibit prostacyclin synthase to decrease prostacyclin production 158. Interestingly, pre‐eclamptic plasma was shown to activate NF‐ κ B159 in endothelial cells, while NF‐ κ B is an oxidant‐sensitive nuclear factor that could induce transcription of many mediators of inflammation, including COX‐2 146.…”

“…Several studies also demonstrated the protective effect of selenium against free radical-induced tissue damage (e.g., heart, liver, endothelial cells) [3,15,29,37,39] in vivo. Selenium has also been shown to reduce the renal tubular toxicity of cis-platinum [2,5,20] which is also caused by the increased formation of reactive oxygen species.…”
