Effect of individualized exercise during maintenance haemodialysis on exercise capacity and health-related quality of life in patients with uraemia

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the effect of individualized exercise on exercise capacity and healthrelated quality of life (HRQoL) in uraemic patients during maintenance haemodialysis (MHD). Methods: Patients receiving MHD were divided randomly into a test group, who underwent recumbent cycling exercise during dialysis, and a control group, who performed simple stretching exercises. The same dialysis protocol was used for all study participants. At study start and after 12 weeks, exercise capacity was measured usi… Show more

“…Applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria to titles/abstracts resulted in 44 articles for full‐text screening. Once the full text of those articles was screened, 25 RCTs (1.8% of those identified by the search process) met all inclusion criteria . We also included five systematic reviews for our review of generic HRQOL …”

“…Study and participant characteristics are summarized in Table . Of the 25 RCTs included in this review, 13 studies investigated the effect of aerobic exercise (11 intradialytic and 3 home‐based interventions) . Seven studies looked at the effect of intradialytic resistance exercise .…”

“…Although supervised exercise training has been suggested to improve exercise capacity, muscular strength, and QOL in hemodialysis patients [19][20][21][22], it remains unclear whether such exercise regimes can ameliorate depressive symptoms in these patients. Systematic reviews with meta-analyses are generally considered good means of determining the efficacy and effectiveness of treatments on selected outcomes.…”

“…Health-related QOL (HRQOL) of patients undergoing HD is determined by the complex interplay of psychosocial factors in addition to disease severity and treatment-related factors [3,4]. Patients undergoing HD need to be able to self-manage a long-term disease, and frequently have to make decisions about fluid intake, nutrition, physical activity, and symptom management [5,6].…”
