Effect of laser pulse shaping on photoacoustic dosimetry in retinal models

Abstract: Photoacoustic sensing can be a powerful technique to obtain real-time feedback of laser energy dose in treatments of biological tissue. However, when laser therapy uses pulses with microsecond duration, they are not optimal for photoacoustic pressure wave generation. This study examines a programmable fiber laser technique using pulse modulation in order to optimize the photoacoustic feedback signal to noise ratio (SNR) in a context where longer laser pulses are employed, such as in selective retinal therapy. … Show more

“…40,41 Because the proposed phantom is thermally irreversible, it is easier to use than thermally reversible agar or gelatin phantoms. Furthermore, the proposed phantom can be made simply by mixing chemicals, which is easier than the procedures for polyurethane, 42,43 PVA, 44,45 PVC-P, 46,47 SEBE, 48,49 and oil gel, 50,51 and the presently proposed phantom is also easier to dispose of than those other phantom types. However, compared with PVA, PVC-P, SEBE, and oil gel phantoms, the proposed phantom has less long-term stability because it is a hydrogel.…”
