“…Our findings are in line with the already existing evidence for serotonergic effects of lithium obtained in animal experiments (Ahluwalia and Singhal, 1981;Broderick and Lynch, 1982;De Montigny et al, 1981;Eroglu and Atamer-Simsek, 1980;Friedman et al, 1979;Harrison-Read, 1979;Knapp and Mandell, 1979;Lerer et al, 1980;Maggi and Enna, 1980;Mandell and Knapp, 1976;Poitou et al, 1974;Sangdee and Franz, 1980;Swann et al, 1981;Schubert, 1973;Treiser and Kellar, 1980;Yuwiler et al, 1979). Effects of lithium on 5-HT uptake in platelets were demonstrated also in man (Murphy et al, 1969;Born et al, 1980;Coppen et al, 1980;Corona et al, 1982).…”

“…In any case, the negative relationship with the Ma scale is in the same direction as the tendency (p < 0.1) of the cor relation between Ma and serotonin, which suggests a possible deficit of the indoleamine availability in hypomanic subjects. This would be in accord with the benefi cial effects on manic episodes obtained by treatments that increase the serotonin content [Perez-Cruet et al, 1971;Schou and Schaw, 1973;Poitou et al, 1974;Sangdee and Franz, 1980], The factor analysis performed (table V) represents a summary of the most relevant results obtained consid ering the two groups together. In the first factor (anxietydepression) and the second (psychosis-proneness) no rel evant loadings in biochemical values are observed.…”

“…Many studies have consistently shown an increase of T uptake during shortand long-term Li treatment, Mandell 1973, 1975;Swann et al 1981;Herrero et al 1983;Aragon et al 1987) leading to an apparently persistent increase of the T concentration in the brain (Perez-Cruet et al 1971;Tagliamonte et al 1971;Schubert 1973;Berggren 1985Berggren , 1987. While this is accompanied by an increased 5-HT synthesis after subchronic (3-5 days) treatment (Sheard and Aghajanian 1970;Perez-Cruet et al 1971;Schubert 1973;Graham-Smith and Green 1974;Poitou et al 1974;Berggren 1985), this seems to fade away after brig-term (2-3 weeks) administration (Knapp and Mandell 1975;Swann et al 1981). This does not rule out a role of the effects of Li treatment on T transport in its undisputed but poorly understood effects on 5-HT transmission, because Li affects other parameters of the function of this transmitter which may affect its synthesis (see below).…”
