Abstract:The suppression of the drift cyclotron loss cone (DCLC) instability by the localized electrostatic trapping of cold ions is considered. Calculations indicate that the trapped cold ions can suppress the DCLC mode with a cold-ion throughput and energy drain which are smaller than in present stream-stabilized systems.
