The kinetics of mass transfer for the chemical extraction of various metal cations with bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) has been studied in a stirred cell. With all cations investigated (Cd z +, Cu z +, Ni z +, Pb z +, Zn z +) , mass transfer is found to be limited by diffusion as indicated by a linear increase of initial extraction rate with stining speed. Mass transfer coefficients of individual species are determined at experimental conditions that maintain mass transfer resistance in the donor phase. With known individual mass transfer coefficients and measured equilibrium data (stoichiometric coefficients and equilibrium constants), concentration courses in the stirred cell can be calculated for multi-cation co-extraction. Experimental and calculated results show good agreement, confirming the basic assumption that the chemical reaction is located at the liquid/liquid interface. 493

The use of liquid ion exchangers enables one to perform selective separations with reactive extraction of species such as metal ions or acids. For the simulation of countercurrent column performance, three major outstanding issues have to be tackled: The first step is in a description of reactive equilibria, based on Gibbs excess modeling, taking into account complex formation involving aqueous electrolytes and organic species. In addition to physical extraction, the mass transfer co-efficient must be determined by taking into account diffusional and/or chemical reaction resistances. Finally, the column hydrodynamics have to be considered, where the state of the art design is to consider the deviation from plug flow with one parameter (e.g. the axial dispersion co-efficient). The development of droplet population methods, and the helpful information from CFD-calculations for the improvement of the physical understanding of complex flows, will be discussed. The use of lab-scale equipment to estimate all necessary design parameters involving a minimum of matter, is also presented.

Abstract. Recent decades, it is an awareness of the importance of ecological balance in the environment, balances threatened by industrial pollution. A new spirit presides we seek to minimize pollution of receiving waters. The present work is to study the liquid-gel-extraction of zinc ions in perchlorate medium by an acid extractant: the di (ethyl-2 hexyl) phosphorique acid, or DEHPA. Two types of polymers were used as supports of solvent extraction: a polybutadiene rubber cross-linked respectively with 0.1% dicumyl peroxide and 0.4% dicumyl peroxide, vulcanized at 160°C, one is most cross-linked than the other. The liquid-gel extraction is based on the principles of the liquid-liquid extraction.
