Effect of Mechanical Vibrations During Transport Operations of Nilo Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Abstract: Oscillatory movements present in the transport of live fish may compromise the physiological stability and the future performance of the animals. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of mechanical vibrations in the transport of Nile tilapia through vibration levels and shocks occurred in transport boxes previously installed in a truck. The research was carried out in a fish farming integrating company in the state of Ceará, Brazil, with the monitoring of 5 live fish l… Show more

“…A naïve group was also included which did not receive any treatment during the experiment being maintained in the 500-L tanks. To simulate transport conditions, the plastic boxes were placed over a table vibrating at a mean 0.62 ± 0.24 m s −2 and producing a noise of 77.8 ± 0.47 dB, thus mimicking the conditions observed in the transport of live animals [ 35 , 36 , 37 ]. In addition, Nile tilapia were transport simulated for 6 h to mimic the common duration of short and regional transportation (range between 4 and 8 h, reviewed in [ 6 ]).…”

“…81 There is little existing research documenting the effect of noise during the transport of ornamental fish, but oscillatory movements during transport have the potential to compromise fish health. 83 A multitude of sounds and vibrations are likely to be experienced by fish in the ornamental trade including engine noise, human speech and noise from aquarium filters as well as vibrations associated with noise. Aquarium filters mask auditory hearing of goldfish (Carassius auratus), specifically when filter frequency noises are at 15-19 dB (0.1-0.3kHz) and recommendations have been made for hobbyists to purchase quiet filter setups to improve welfare conditions within home aquaria.…”
