Effect of Mix Design Variables on Thermal Cracking Performance Parameters of Asphalt Mixtures

Abstract: To address asphalt pavement thermal cracking, researchers have developed performance-based evaluation tools for asphalt mixtures. A minimum fracture energy obtained from a disc-shaped compact tension test and Black space parameters determined by the stiffness and relaxation properties of asphalt mixtures are two such methods to ensure good thermal cracking resistance. Mix specifiers and producers strive to meet the requirements set by these performance-based criteria by adjusting their mix designs. However, th… Show more

“…In this study, a preliminary visual check for outliers was performed using standard box plots to visualize data distributions, skewness, and spread. Next, outlier analysis was performed using JMP ® software following the Mahalanobis distance approach, which has been successfully employed by other researchers to identify and remove outliers ( 11 , 12 ). Three outlier replicates were identified in the SCB data set and removed before performing further statistical analysis.…”

“…Summary of Tukey's HSD Connecting Letter Report for DCT, SCB, and OT Laboratory Performance Tests not meant to provide strong conclusions on the impact of mixture variables on performance indices. An example of a more confirmatory correlation analysis is given in a recent study by Oshone et al (12), which considers the effect of mix design variables on thermal cracking performance parameters of mixtures from fracture energy derived from DCT testing and Black space location from complex modulus testing.…”

“…Subsequent research has further developed G-R m to use a commonly measured temperature-frequency combination of 20°C and 5 Hz. 25,26 Oshone et al 24 further conducted Pearson's correlation analysis on the G-R m parameter (15°C and 5 rad/s) from the 81 asphalt mixtures. As expected, the binder content and voids in mineral aggregate showed strong correlations where an increase in these parameters results in lowering of G-R m .…”
