Effect of Nitrogen and Compost on Sugarcane (Saccharum Officinarum L.)at Metahara Sugarcane Plantation

Abstract: A study was conducted at Metahara Sugar Estate in Ethiopia with the objectives to determine the optimum rates of nitrogen and compost for sugarcane production, and the effect of compost on soil chemical properties. Four levels of nitrogen (0, 46, 92, and 138 Kg /ha) and five levels of compost (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 ton/ha) were combined in factorial arrangement. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. It was conducted on clay soils (Haplic Cambisols). Soil sample… Show more

“…Application of Zn (soil and foliar) with press mud addition enhanced crop production (khan et al 2015). In this study, improved crop productivity is due to the supply of macro (NPK) and micronutrient (Zn, Fe, Cu, and Mn) through nutrient-enriched press mud having potential to activate the microbial activities in soil rhizosphere making the readily availability of nutrients to rhizospheric microbes which ultimately increase the soil enzymatic activity and increase the phytoavailability of required nutrients to the crop and increase the crop growth (Bangar et al 2000;Rakkiyappan et al 2001). Second reason for the more growth and yield of maize is the application of Zn with press mud, because, for plants, Zn is necessary for auxin synthesis which elongates the plant cell and enhances the cell growth (Imran and Rehim 2017).…”

“…Sugarcane plants, if there is a lack or excess of growth elements, the number of tillers will decrease, and the leaves will turn blue-green as a result of the increase in anthocyanin pigment levels and cause inhibition of the photosynthesis process. (Girma Abejehu, 2014), stated that giving an excessive dose of bio-compost will cause root rot, reduce CO2 efficiency and sucrose levels, resulting in reduced tiller formation and stunted growth.…”
