Effect of operation parameters on temperature rising elution fractionation and crystallization analysis fractionation

Abstract: Crystallization analysis fractionation and temperature rising elution fractionation are two techniques used to estimate the chemical composition distributions of semicrystalline copolymers. This study investigates the cooling rate and cocrystallization effects for both techniques with a series of ethylene/1-olefin copolymers and their blends. Ideally, both techniques should operate in the vicinity of thermodynamic equilibrium so that crystallization kinetic effects are avoided. The results show that, in fact, … Show more

“…Ultimate mechanical properties and crack resistance improve as the length of the side branch increases, possibly because SCB influences morphology and tie-molecule concentration, requiring greater energy to be absorbed to initiate cracks [33]. SCB is usually detected and quantified using analytical techniques like solution differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), temperature rising elution fractionation (TREF), and crystallization analysis fractionation (CRYSTAF) [34][35][36][37][38][39].…”

“…The development of fundamental models for TREF and Crystaf is a hard subject that is beyond the scope of this short review. [9,10] Hyphenated Techniques: TREF-LS When a light-scattering detector is added to TREF, it is possible to measure the weight average molecular weight (M w ) of polyolefin as a function of elution temperature or comonomer fraction. This technique provides a complementary analysis to the other hyphenated technique, GPC-IR, described above.…”
