Lettuce is an important leafy vegetable crop, which contains many essential elements and vitamins for human health. The field experiments were conducted at the experimental station of the National Research Centre, Nobaria, Beheira Governorate, (Egypt) during the cultivation seasons of 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 to evaluate lettuce productivity (cv. Balady) using moringa seed cake as natural nutrients source comparing with other organic fertilizer (vermicompost) and chemical fertilizer (Ammonium sulfate) as well as a foliar application at two concentrations (5 and 10 g/L) of moringa leaf extract compared to untreated control. The obtained results showed positive effects for soil fertilizer application of moringa seed cake treatment on vegetative characters, i.e., fresh weight (g/plant) and leaf neck width (cm) as well as chemical contents, i.e., dry matter (%) and nitrate content (mg/kg). Moringa seed cake treatment recorded the same value as Ammonium sulfate treatment on their effects on plant height, leaf width and N, P and K content. The foliar application of moringa leaf extract at a higher rate (10g/L) ranked first followed by the rate of 5g/L for improving the vegetative growth characteristics of the lettuce plant and its chemical contents. Concerning the interaction treatments between soil additions and foliar applications of moringa leaf extract, the highest values of fresh weight, plant height, leaf length, leaf width and leaf neck width leaf dry matter, chlorophyll content and macronutrients (NPK) as well as the lowest value of nitrate content were resulted from fertilized lettuce with moringa seed cake and foliar spraying with a higher rate (10g/L) of moringa leaf extract.

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is a significant user of pesticides, relying on agriculture for economic development. Pesticides and agrochemicals contribute to the presence of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the environment. This review addresses knowledge gaps in monitoring and quantification of POPs, the application of natural coagulants for bioremediation, and associated environmental and health risks in SSA. Findings reveal inconsistencies in monitoring methods and analytes, hindering the identification of temporal trends. Legacy POPs show decreasing concentrations in soil/sediment and aquatic organisms, while some POPs increase in water, fish, fruits, and vegetables. Some river systems exceed acceptable ranges for PCBs according to USEPA standards. PFASs, particularly PFOA and PFOS, are prevalent. Natural coagulants, like Moringa oleifera and chitosan, are gaining popularity for water treatment due to their environmental sustainability and effectiveness in POP remediation. Trivalent cations in natural coagulants show promise for POP bioremediation. However, challenges remain in scaling up natural coagulant applications for commercial water treatment. This review highlights the need for standardized monitoring procedures and emphasizes the potential of natural coagulants in POP remediation efforts.

Moringa oleifera (moringa) stands out as a promising plant in several segments, being produced worldwide. However, its co-products, particularly valves and seed husks, which represent more than 70% of its fruit, remain underutilized. Therefore, this work aimed to assess the use of parts of the moringa fruit in conjunction with sediment from an artificial pond in a zoo enclosure inhabited by Tapirus terrestris (tapir), exploring the potential treatment of these wastes, using Eisenia foetidaearthworms. Five experimental conditions were analyzed, whose waste proportions were varied. The vermicomposts were not phytotoxic and differed regarding the C/N ratio; those that received parts of the moringa fruit had a higher C/N ratio. As commonly observed in stabilization processes, the contents of P, K, Ca, and electrical conductivity increased, while carbon and pH decreased during stabilization. Plant development of Catharanthus roseus was evaluated using, in addition to the vermicomposts, two commercial composts. The vermicomposts provided better development of C. roseus than the commercial composts, with T2 (65% sediment+35% fruit valves) and T3 (50% sediment+35% valves+15% seed husks) standing out as the best treatments. Vermicomposting associated with moringa co-products and zoo waste is a viable alternative via aerobic treatment, favoring waste management and the search for sustainability.
