Effect of organic modifier type of montmorillonite on the poly (butyl acrylate-co-methyl methacrylate)/montmorillonite nanocomposite

Abstract: Nanocomposites based on poly(BA-co-MMA) and organo-montmorillonite (OMt) were synthesized by semi batch emulsion polymerization. OMt was used directly after the organic modification of sodium montmorillonite (Mt). By this way, dispersion of OMt in emulsion polymerization was improved. OMts were prepared by organic modification of Resadiye Mt (bentonite) with five different quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) to observe the effect of structural difference on the poly(butyl acrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) nanocompo… Show more

“…PA + EP coating system has higher gloss value than other coating systems which is 94.6 GU. The higher value of glossiness could be related to the good cross-linking between an epoxy resin and polyamide resin, resulting in the smooth surface (Vatansever et al , 2016). A smooth coating surface will give higher glossiness because of a large amount of light being reflected, while in a rough surface, there is no reflection of light as the light is scattered in all direction (Dashtizadeh et al , 2011).…”

“…Organic modifiers, typically ammonium cations that bear long‐alkyl chains, have been widely used to modify MMT. The metallic cations in MMT can be exchanged with quaternary ammonium or alkyl phosphonium cations, and formation of an organic‐modified MMT (OMMT) with larger inter‐platelet spacing normally leads to optimum properties, especially better mechanical and better barrier properties of the polymer nanocomposite . The inclusion of MMT may also enhance the strength and thermal stability of the char layer formed at the combustion.…”

“…It is, therefore, necessary to check the interaction between the monomer, the initiator, and the modified clay surface in a systematic manner. Intercalated polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) nanocomposites have been synthesized through either emulsion [45][46][47][48] or bulk polymerization [49,50]. The structural affinity between the styrene monomer and the organic cation played an important role in the PS/clay hybrid structure [51].…”
