The aim of the present study was to evaluate new and traditional surface materials for use in cattle barns. The evaluated concrete materials had different compositions and included different additives and coatings. Contact angle meter, optical profilometry and scanning electron microscopy SEM were used for characterization of surface properties. Radiochemical methods and a biochemical adenosine triphosphate ATP method were used to determine cleanability. A specific methodological aim was to examine the correlations between these determination methods. A statistically significant difference was observed between contact angles of non-coated concretes, coated concretes and joint materials. In general, coatings smoothened surfaces and the joint materials were the roughest surfaces, as illustrated by profilometry and SEM. On the basis of the radiochemical determination methods, coatings improved the cleanability of concrete. An epoxy joint material was cleaned efficiently from the oil model soil and from the labelled feed soil when compared to the two cement-based joint materials. According to the results of the biochemical ATP method the manure test soil was cleaned better from a concrete including inorganic sealant than from the other materials examined. The cleanability results of oil model soil used in the radiochemical method correlated with the results of the test feed soil used in the biochemical ATP method. Both determination methods of cleanability appeared to be suitable for examining the cleanability of surfaces soiled with agricultural soils. Only the radiochemical determination gives detailed quantitative results, but it can be used only in laboratory studies. The results of this laboratory study will be used for selecting materials for a pilot study in a cattle barn.

The effects of three plasticizers and two plasticizer concentrations on the topography and soiling of poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) were studied. Palmitic acid and triolein were chosen to represent solid and liquid soils. The feasibility of using infrared spectroscopy to quantify the amount of soil on PVC was examined. The structure of the solid model soil on plasticized PVC was studied with optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Palmitic acid formed two different structures on the PVC surface. Both the type and concentration of the plasticizer influenced the structure of the oily soil on plasticized PVC. The wetting of plasticized PVC with the liquid oily soil was compared to wetting with water through the measurement of the contact angles. Plasticized PVC was hydrophobic and oleophilic.

This study investigates the performance of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plasticized with diisononyl phthalate (DINP), rapeseed oil epoxidized ester (ROE), and rapeseed oil carbonated ester (ROC). The formulations were evaluated for surface resistance, wettability, migration, mechanical properties, and resistance to aging and thermal degradation. PVC/ROC exhibited the highest surface resistance of 1.5 × 1016 Ω, indicating superior electrical insulation. Wettability tests showed PVC/ROE with the highest contact angle at 63°, while PVC/ROC and PVC/DINP demonstrated lower contact angles of 44° and 43°, respectively. Migration tests revealed that PVC/ROC had the lowest migration rates: 0.1% in distilled water and 1.5% in 95% ethanol. Mechanical testing under algae exposure demonstrated that PVC/ROC achieved the highest tensile strength of 43 MPa and a strain at break of 200%. After 1008 h of thermo‐oxidative aging, PVC/ROC retained superior tensile strength and hardness, while PVC/ROE showed a slight decrease. PVC/ROC also demonstrated improved thermal stability at 255°C compared with DINP (245°C). These results confirm that ROC is an effective bio‐based plasticizer, providing enhanced mechanical properties, reduced migration, and greater durability compared to conventional DINP, offering a sustainable alternative for diverse PVC applications in medical, automotive, and packaging industries.
