Effect of Polyelectrolyte Adsorption on Intercolloidal Forces

Abstract: The behavior of polyelectrolytes between charged surfaces immersed in semi-dilute solutions is investigated theoretically. A continuum mean field approach is used for calculating numerically concentration profiles between two electrodes held at a constant potential. A generalized contact theorem relates the inter-surface forces to the concentration profiles. The numerical results show that over-compensation of the surface charges by adsorbing polyelectrolytes can lead to effective attraction between equally ch… Show more

“…Repeating the adsorption of alternating positively and negatively charged PE's, it is possible to create a multilayer structure of PE's at the surface. Although many experiments and potential applications for PE multilayers exist, the theory of PE overcompensation is only starting to be developed [157,190,191,193,205,206,209]. The scaling laws presented for constant U s can be used also for the case of constant surface charge.…”

“…Obtaining attractive interactions between likecharged macroions is also possible on the level of PB theory if additional order parameters are considered. This is the case, for instance, upon including the solvent structure [12] or the presence of polyelectrolytes [13,14] into PB theory.…”

“…The organization of F-actin is controlled predominantly by actin binding proteins (ABP's), which crosslink actin into a polymorphism of bundle and network phases [1][2][3], through a process that has recently been examined theoretically [4,5]. Espins are a recently discovered class of ABP's responsible for the formation of parallel actin bundles in vivo and in vitro [6][7][8].…”
