Effect of polyurethane sizing agent on interface properties of carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate composites

Abstract: This work is aimed at investigating how molecule structure of polyurethanes (PUs) as sizing agents influence the interface properties of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polycarbonate (PC) composites. Effects of four PUs as sizing agents for CF on the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of CF reinforced PC composites are investigated. It is found that the three PUs except PC-PU as sizing agents on oxidized CF (OCF) made the ILSS of their reinforced PC composites increase up to 62.9 MPa by more than 24.8%. The chemi… Show more

“…Zhang et al [ 88 ] used polyurethane (PU) for carbon fibre sizing before hot pressing with polycarbonate (PC) films to form CF/PC composite laminates. Four types of PU were used to size carbon fibres, namely: blocked polyisocyanate PU, PC-PU, polyester PU and blocked polyether PU.…”

“…Researchers have done much work on sizing CF for reinforcing thermoplastic resins. [14][15][16][17] Karsli et al revealed that polyurethan or polyamide as sizing agent of CF for reinforcing polyamide 66 (PA66) matrix possessed higher interfacial adhesion than other sizing materials, and tensile strength of the composites was enhanced by about 18% compared with that with unsized CF. 18 Liu et al used poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) that is the same as the matrix resin to size CF and found the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the sized CF reinforced composite was increased by 30%.…”

“…Many approaches have been adopted to enhance the interfacial interaction between PI fibers and resin matrix, including plasma, 10 chemical crosslinking, 11 alkali treatment, 12 radiation 13 and sizing treatment 14–15 . For instance, Dang et al 16 functionalized the alkali‐treated PI fibers surface with cellulose nanocrystals under the combined catalytic action of a Lewis acid and a crosslinker, improving the oxygen‐containing polar groups and the surface roughness of the PI fibers.…”
