Effect of pressure on the crystal structure of ettringite

Abstract: X-ray diffraction and infrared data have been collected from a sample of ettringite from ambient pressure to 6.4 GPa. The sample was found to reversibly transform to an amorphous phase at 3 GPa. The isothermal bulk modulus of ettringite was found to be 27(7) GPa and the incompressibilities of the lattice parameters were found to be 71(30) GPa along a and 108(36) GPa along c.

“…Traditional methods of determining elastic properties rely on having crystalline samples. For example, bulk moduli have been determined [7][8][9][10][11][12] using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, which measures unit-cell volumes of crystalline cement hydration products as a function of pressure. These methods have not been widely applied to amorphous phases due to the general belief that crystalline materials are necessary.…”

“…The two main outputs of this study were the isothermal bulk modulus of ettringite, 27 GPa, and its transformation to an amorphous phase at pressures above 3 GPa. [97] The bulk modulus of gel C-S-H is of utmost importance as it is the main binding component in OPC mortars and concretes. However, as its chemical composition can vary, to report a single number is complicate.…”

“…Recently, mechanical properties of calcium aluminate hydrates as well as calcium silicate hydrates have been successfully tested using HPXRD (Moon et al 2011(Moon et al , 2012Oh et al 2011Oh et al , 2012Clark et al 2008). The application of the technique to cement and concrete research has many potential opportunities.…”
