Effect of Scroll Pin Profile and Tool Rotational Speed on Mechanical Properties of Submerged Friction Stir Processed AZ31B Magnesium Alloy

Abstract: In this study, an effort has been made to choose an appropriate tool pin profile and rotational speed for a tool using a submerged friction stir processed hot rolled AZ31B magnesium alloy. A defect free process region was obtained using a novel tool shoulder, which consisted of a scroll. Three tool pin profiles, namely, simple cylindrical, stepped cylindrical and stepped square pin have been used. Tensile properties and fracture behavior revealed defect free friction stir processed specimens. The microstructur… Show more

“…This indicated a variation in failure behavior resulting from different welding methods and reinforcement strategies [46]. The fractures exhibited a distinctive ductile nature, evident from the abundant presence of circular dimples (denoted by dotted yellow circles) with varying sizes [35,46,47]. These dimples are typically due to plastic deformation and material flow during fracture.…”

“…Ramaiyan et al [19] investigated the effects of stepped cylindrical and stepped square pins on the mechanical properties of AZ31B magnesium alloy submerged FSW. The stepped tool with a square pin reveals more recrystallization with refined grains in the nugget zone without any defects when compared to its counterparts.…”

“…Tensile strength and fracture behaviour showed drastic improvement as compared to the original AZ31B Magnesium alloy. 29 To improve the environment in which people may live, many environmental issues that are constantly emerging must be addressed. One of them is animal waste bone since the decomposition process is extremely slow and the unpleasant odour it produces throughout the region is quite dangerous.…”
