Effect of Short-Term Aging Process on the Moisture Susceptibility of Asphalt Mixtures and Binders Containing Sasobit Warm Mix Additive

Abstract: Moisture susceptibility is one of the key issues of warm mix asphalt (WMA). In this research, the moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures and binders containing Sasobit warm mix additive was investigated in comparison to that of hot mixture asphalt (HMA) through laboratory aging experiments. The WMA asphalt mixtures were aged in the laboratory at three aging temperatures and times. The moisture susceptibility of the asphalt mixtures was measured through the laboratory immersed Marshall test and freeze-thaw… Show more

“…The performance of asphalt mixtures is greatly influenced by moisture and aging [1,[2][3][4][5][6]. Moisture damage in an asphalt mixture results adhesive or cohesive failure, or a combination of both [7].…”

“…Li et al [10] studied the moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures and binders with Sasobit warm mix additive compared to hot mix asphalt. Aging duration and temperature affected moisture susceptibility, as shown by freeze-thaw splitting strength ratios and residual Marshall stability.…”

“…Aschenbrener et al used the Hamburg wheel test to evaluate the HMA with 2, 4, and 8 h of short-term aging, concluding that short-term aging could significantly increase the moisture resistance and lower the rutting depth . Similar TSR results showing the positive effect of aging could also be found in refs , , and . However, many studies still pointed out the adverse impact of aging on moisture resistance, especially for long-term aging. Do et al evaluated the moisture durability of HMA subjected to 1, 2, and 4 weeks of oven aging at 160 °C and found that long-term aging could reduce the moisture durability by 22–45% .…”
