“…This study, however, has three important limitations: a small sample size, short duration (only one month), and lacks a control group. Contrary to this, Cotlus [5] did not find a significant correlation between sleep position and appearance of the facial wrinkles. Forty one "right-sided" and 23 "left-sided" participants were included in the study.…”

“…19 Several studies have postulated that a side sleep position contributes to facial aging and rhytid formation from mechanical pressure, shear, compression, and pulling due to chronically having greater surface contact. 15,16,27 Educating physicians, patients, and the general public regarding the effects of sleep position may be helpful in delaying the onset or progression of upper eyelid descent considering that a lateral sleeping position tends to be the predominant sleeping position in adults. 15,28,29 The effects of sleep positioning should be determined considering the significant portion of one’s life spent sleeping.…”

“…12–15 Sleep side preference has been correlated with facial asymmetry, eyelid laxity, lower eyelid ectropion, floppy eyelid syndrome, and increased severity of keratoconus. 16–19 Previous studies differ regarding the effects of sleep side preference on sleep lines and rhytid formation. 15,16,20…”

“…Kotlus did not find an association between sleep side and wrinkles. 57 However, they looked at all wrinkles and did not differentiate wrinkle types. They also relied on subjective questionnaires to determine sleep position which is much more variable than subjects estimate.…”
