“…According to clinically incomplete statistics, the majority of patients in surgical postoperative 6 h are accompanied by strong thirst symptoms, and more than 70% of patients with moderately severe thirst accounted for; patients with a serious thirst not only cause physical discomfort but may also cause psychological distress in a state of anxiety; adherence to treatment and rehabilitation progress produces serious influence [ 2 , 3 ]. Therefore, as one of the main factors affecting the recovery and prognosis of the disease, thirst assessment plays an important role in alleviating the symptoms of thirst and speeding up recovery by understanding the risk factors that cause thirst and reducing postoperative thirst [ 4 ]. Therefore, in the first part of this study, the relevant factors leading to the increased thirst degree of patients after gastrointestinal surgery in our hospital are analyzed from both the surgical and psychological aspects through retrospective experiments.…”

“…” (Allida et al., 2021; Anderson et al., 2021). The questions asked reflect the difficulty in self‐assessing thirstiness perception, and that the thirstiness sensation is not usually asked about as a single parameter but is associated with other parameters such as refreshing, saliva stimulating (van Belzen et al., 2017), dry mouth (Armstrong et al., 2020; Oztas & Oztas, 2022; Zhang et al., 2022), or urine osmolality (Sekiguchi et al., 2022). It has also been shown that the VAS is equally valid whether it is on paper or in electronic format (Delgado et al., 2018).…”

“…It was reported in a published systematic review study that cold oral stimuli are effective in reducing postoperative thirst 22 . Patients having abdominal surgery may get thirst relief with the use of cold water, ice, and cold menthol treatments, among other techniques 12 , 22 , 23 . Studies have shown that patients can safely use 8–10 ice cubes, equivalent to a total of 40–50 ml (1 ice cube = 5 ml), throughout the day to prevent thirst 1 , 24 .…”
