Effect of supplementation level on performance of growing Nellore and its influence on pasture characteristics in different seasons

Abstract: Eighty-four Nellore bulls (269 ± 27 kg; 13 months) were used in a completely randomized design to evaluate different supplementation strategies on the performance of growing Nellore cattle grazing Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania in the rainy season and rainy-to-dry season transition. In the rainy season, 42 animals received mineral salt (MS) ad libitum and 42 received protein supplement (PR) at 1 g kg À1 body weight (BW). In the rainy-to-dry season transition, 28 animals received MS, 28 received PR at 1 g kg À1 B… Show more

“…Higher ADG and final BW values in the heifers from the SUP group than in those from the CON group were recorded, which was in accordance with other studies concerning concentrate supplementation of growing cows in a summer pasture ( 4 ). These results suggest that concentrate supplementation could be effective in improving the performance of grazing heifers.…”

“…Most beef cattle are grazed extensively on pasture without any feed supplements on the grasslands of Inner Mongolia in northern China, which results in decreased animal performance and low productivity ( 3 ). Many researchers have revealed that the dry matter intake (DMI) and productivity of grazing ruminants during periods of pasture grazing or nutrient deficiencies could be improved by supplementation with protein ( 4 ), minerals ( 5 ), or multinutrient concentrates ( 6 ). Pasture availability and nutritive value seem to be sufficient to meet the requirements for cattle grazing in summer.…”

“…Similarly, Lima et al (2012) found that the supplementation strategies evaluated resulted in similar performance when used during the rainy-dry transition period, under conditions of high forage supply, allowed a great selective capacity of animals for more nutritious parts of the plants, that is, the leaves, thus decreasing the effect of increasing levels of supplementation on animal performance. Roth et al (2019) also reported that in the rainy season, performance was not influenced by the level of supplementation, due to the high quality of the forage combined with less need for selection during grazing, due to the lower stocking rate.…”
