Effect of surface mechanical attrition treatment on the microstructure of cobalt–chromium–molybdenum biomedical alloy

Abstract: This research work describes the impact of the surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) on the microstructure of cobalt–chromium–molybdenum (CoCrMo), a biomedical alloy commonly used for orthopedic applications. This surface treatment induces crystalline phases transformations characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The corresponding structural changes are observed from cross‐section images obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission elec… Show more

“…If the value of x is between 0 and 1, the calcium-deficient apatite phase has a Ca/P atomic ratio between 1.5 and 1.67. Crystallization of calcium-deficient apatite produces a mixture of HAP and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) according to reaction (18).…”

“…Typically, this phase has a calcium to phosphorus atomic ratio between 1.5 and 1.6. After post-deposition thermal annealing at a temperature higher than 800 • C, calcium-deficient apatite crystallizes into a biphasic compound made of hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate according to reaction (18) [109]. The proportion of each crystallized phase depends on the stoichiometry of the calcium-deficient apatite, which is described by its calcium to phosphorus atomic ratio.…”

“…4A ) [ 122 , 128 , 129 ]. The basic principle of SMAT is the modification on surface layer of a bulk metallic materials, such as Fe, stainless steel, Ti, Co–Cr and Mg, though repeatedly impacted by multidirectional flying balls (diameter: 1–10 mm) [ 128 , 130 ]. Several studies have confirmed SMAT-treated metals promoted the focal adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of MSCs [ 129 , 131 , 132 ].…”

“…The worldwide clinical demand for skeletal repair is constantly increasing due to the aging of the population [1,2]. Orthopedic and dental surgeries require biocompatible bone implants with appropriate mechanical properties to replace hard tissue functions [3][4][5]. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) defines biocompatibility as the ability of a material to be in contact with a biological system without producing an adverse effect [6].…”
