Paucity of quality fresh water for agriculture has made waste water (WW) application a popular option.Available data on chemical co mposition of different waste water, their effect on soil fert ility, soil heavy-metal content, crop yield and quality parameters and maximu m permissible limits (MPL) of different International environ ment protection agencies and governments of different countries has been summarized. Chemical composition of WW varied remarkably with respect to their heavy-metal content, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), biolog ical o xidation demand (BOD), chemical oxidation demand (COD), alkalinity and hardness. Field application of all types of waste water significantly increases soil OC percentage, soil EC, cation exchange capacity (CEC), total and DTPA-ext ractable heavy-meta l/ mic ro-nutrient content, available macro -nutrient (N, P and K) content with significant decreases in calciu m carbonate content of surface soil. However, high content of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium strengthens its high fertigation/ manural value for field crops. Significantly higher heavy-metal accumu lation in soils irrigated with WW than ground water has been observed in surface layer than the lower depths of soil profile. Since crop genotypes and even crop cultivars within genotypes respond differently to waste water irrigation, their selection becomes mo re important under such situations. More importantly, carbon sequestration through WW irrigation could sustain long-term soil fert ility. Periodic monitoring of chemical composition of waste water, soil and crop produce is however, suggested for safe and long term use of waste water.

Plant A high-yielding Canada Prairie Spring (CPS cv. HY320) semi-dwarf wheat and a highyielding durum line (DT367) were compared to standard hard red spring (cv. Neepawa) and durum (cv. Wakooma) wheats to assess the basis for the yield differences and to examine soil moisture use. The study was carried out under dryland (moisture used from seeding to harvest was 287 mm), partial irrigation (moisture used was 374 mm) and full irrigation (moisture used was 547 mm) on a loam soil at Swift Current during 3 yr. Phenological development was delayed as much as 30 d by improved moisture conditions. At ligule of last leaf visible (LLV), HY320 had one or two more green leaves on the main tiller than did Neepawa; Wakooma generally had one more leaf than DT367. However, leaf area index was generally not different among cultivars. Harvest index was greater for the higher yielding cultivars even though cultivars did not differ in total aboveground dry matter. HY320 generally had the highest grain yield, followed by DT367, Wakooma and Neepawa. Neepawa consistently had the most heads per unit area at harvest but, because of high kernel numbers per head, HY320 produced the greatest number of kernels per unit area; as well, HY320 had large kernels; thus, it had the highest yield potential under optimum growing conditions. HY320 had the highest base temperature (Zo) for kernel growth and the highest kernel growth rates immediately after anthesis; consequently, HY320 kernels completed growth with the lowest accumulated degree days above Tb. DT367 had the highest potential kernel weight and Neepawa the lowest. There were no differences among the cultivars in the amount of moisture used between seeding and harvest. (1980) found that these varieties were shorter and reached anthesis earlier than the older varieties. Total dry matter production of the new and old varieties was similar; the increase in grain yield was due mainly to increased harvest index (grain yield/grain * straw yield). Fischer (1983) in Mexico and Bremner and Davidson (1978) (Campbell et al. 1971). The moisture to 120 cm at anthesis was estimated by adding the moisture below 90 cm at seeding to the moisture content of the top 90 cm at anthesis.
