Effect of the mixed bacterial vaccine on the immune response of patients with non-small cell lung cancer and refractory malignancies

Abstract: Since 1984, 13 patients were entered into our study and 12 patients have completed one or more cycles of treatment with mixed bacterial vaccine (MBV), a natural biologic response modifier derived from Sireprococcus pyogenes and Serratia marcescens. Eight patients with refractory malignancy were treated with MBV only (0.1 ml intravenously [ I v) twice weekly for 3-16 weeks (colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, chronic lymphatic leukemia, hepatoma [two patients], sarcoma [three patientsl). Four patients with ad… Show more

“…Historically, various clinical trials were initiated, for instance with the injection of activated macrophages (38) or cytokines and microbial derived molecules (39–43) aiming at activating macrophages directly in vivo . Anti-tumoral effects of such macrophage activators have been reported, but such approaches have been globally disappointing.…”

“…39 Other studies on MBV primarily investigated immunomodulation and tolerability. 47 , 48 Recently, 128 cases treated with MBV between 1890 and 1960 were matched with 1675 control patients from the Surveillance Epidemiology End Results (SEER) cancer registry who received a cancer diagnosis in 1983. The survival rates were not significantly different, despite the tremendous advances in surgical techniques and modern medicine with which patients in the SEER group were treated ( Table 2 ).…”
