Effect of the type and level of hydration of alcoholic solvents on the simultaneous extraction of oil and chlorogenic acids from sunflower seed press cake

Abstract: Alcoholic solvents can be used for extraction to produce sunflower seed oil containing minor compounds that give it greater oxidative stability. In addition, the results obtained using hydrous ethanol showed that this solvent can yield defatted sunflower seed meal with a low content of CAs, enabling future use of the protein fraction. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…Alcoholic solvents presented accumulated extraction yields higher than 90%, however, IPA0 presents better performance (96.3 ± 0.1%) when compared to Et0 (92 ± 1%) ( p < 0.05). Previous studies comparing the performance of Et0 and IPA0 have shown that with the latter is achieved higher oil extraction yields, which may be related to the lower polarity of IPA0.…”

“…The same did not happen in mass yield and, or deacidification yield, because, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, the results of yield do not comply the number of contacts. This demonstrates that the solvent has more affinity with fatty acids, and the losses in the process refer to the neutral oil drag (Sawada, Venâncio, Toda, & Rodrigues, 2014; Scharlack et al, 2017; Toda, Sawada, & Rodrigues, 2016).…”

“…Some works suggest to replace it with green solvents such as ethanol and isopropanol, or such as mechanical extraction without solvent (Araújo et al, 2018; Bessa, Ferreira, Rodrigues, Batista, & Meirelles, 2017; Cornelio‐Santiago, Mazalli, Rodrigues, & Oliveira, 2019). Furthermore, modern methods such as aqueous, enzymatic extraction with microwaves, ultrasound, or supercritical fluids can be used (Gaber, Tujillo, Mansour, & Juliano, 2018; Koubaa, Mhemdi, & Vorobiev, 2016; Scharlack, Aracava, & Rodrigues, 2017), increasing the extraction yield and maintaining oil quality (Sánchez, Fernández, & Nolasco, 2017).…”
