ABSTRACT:The present study on German Shepherd bitches bred in the same environment of a private kennel and producing offspring for working purposes aimed to ascertain if any of the parameters: litter size, number of live puppies, stillbirth and mortality of puppies is determined by the month of whelping, parity, number of whelpings for one bitch over the course of one year, pregnancy length or bitch age at the time of whelping. Reproductive records of 73 bitches of German Shepherd breed (GSB) documented since 2001 till 2013 were processed. A total of 298 whelpings resulted in 2075 puppies; mortality of puppies was evaluated within the first 3 weeks of life. A significant seasonal influence on litter size and number of live born puppies, but not on stillbirth or mortality, was found. The parity of GSB significantly influenced litter size, live born puppies, and the incidence of stillbirths. The number of whelpings in one bitch over the course of one year significantly influenced litter size, while puppy losses were the same when bitches were bred once or twice a year. Litter size and number of live born puppies had a significant negative effect on pregnancy length. Furthermore, the number of stillbirths significantly increased when pregnancy was prolonged. Bitch age did not influence litter size, number of live born puppies and stillbirths, however it significantly affected mortality.

Özet: Araştırmanın amacı Ankara bölgesinde bir çiftlikte yetiştirilen Kangal köpeklerinde dölverimi, yaşama gücü ve büyüme özelliklerini belirlemektir. Araştırma, Ankara-Haymana'da 30 ergin ve163 yavru ile yürütülmüştür. Ortalama ilk östrus gösterme yaşı 408.5 gün, östrus sayısı, yaz, kış, sonbahar ve ilkbaharda sırasıyla 18,14,11 ve 7 dir. Mevsimin etkisi önemlidir. Östruslar arası süre, gebe kalanlarda 236.6, kalmayanlarda 182.6 gün; ortalama proöstrus ve östrus süreleri sırasıyla 7.5 ve 4.9; gebelik öncesi ile süt kesim sonrası ortalama canlı ağırlık değişimi 2.6 kg dır. Doğum tipinin etkisi önemlidir. Ortalama gebelik süresi 60.8 gün, östrus oranı %100, yalancı gebelik oranı %8.6, doğum oranı %91.4 bir doğumda ortalama yavru sayısı 5.9 dur. Ana yaşının etkisi önemsizdir. Ortalama ölü doğum oranı %6.7'dir ve bu oran 7-9 ve 1-3 yavrulu doğum tiplerinde sırasıyla %8.1 ve %4.7'dir ve sonbahar-kış'ta %8.0, ilkbahar-yaz'da %3.9; 5-7 yaşlı anaların yavrularında %19.2 dir. Mevsim ve ana yaşının etkisi önemlidir. Yaşama gücü 120. günde %86.8, mevsimin etkisi 30. güne kadar önemlidir. Erkek ve dişi yavrularda doğum ağırlığı sırasıyla 0.54 ve 0.52 kg, Doğum tipi, mevsim ve cinsiyetin etkileri sırasıyla 60,45 ve15.güne kadar önemli olmuştur. Reproductive traits, viability and growth of Kangal shepherd dogsSummary: This research held to determine the reproduction, viability and growth characteristics of the Kangal Dogs which locates in Haymana-Ankara city. Data belonging to 30 bitches and 163 puppies of Kangal Breed have been used. Average age was 408. 5 days for first oestrus time. It was seen that the oestruse number were distributed over all the seasons as 18, 14, 11 and 7 in the summer, winter, autumn and spring seasons respectively. The effect of the season on oestrus time was significant. Oestruses interval in pregnant and non-pregnant animals were 236.6 and 182.6 days respectively. Average prooestrus and oestrus periods were 7.5 and 4.9 days respectively. Average live weight change between prior to their gestation and the weaning period was 2.6 kg. The effect of birth type was significant. The average gestation period was 60.8 days. The average rate of the oestrus, pseudo pregnancy, breeding and number of the puppies was found as 100 %, 8.6%, 91.4 % and 5.9 respectively. The effect of mother's age was not significant. The stillbirth rate has been realized as 6.7%. The highest rate has been determined in the birth type with 7-9 (8.1%) the lowest rate was in 1-3 (4.7%) puppies. The stillbirth rates in autumn-winter and spring-summer have been determined 8.0 and 3.9 % respectively. This rate was 19.2% at the puppies of 5-7 years of age mothers. The effect of the season and mother age was significant. The average rates of viability at 120 th of age were found as 87.8 %.
