Objective To compare the treatment effect of five electrical stimulation methods commonly used in the treatment of stroke patients with lower limb dysfunction. Methods We implemented a systematic search of 3915 studies published up to January 2023 from eight databases and two clinical trial registries. First, two independent reviewers critically evaluated trial eligibility according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Next, they selected and extracted data. Then, they assessed the risk of bias. Pairwise meta-analysis and Bayesian network meta-analysis were conducted to estimate the effectiveness and ranking of the five electrical stimulation methods. Results A total of 33 trials with a final total of 2246 subjects were included in the analysis. By combining the comprehensive Rehabilitation Treatment (RT), the treatment effects of using five electrical stimulation methods were surperior to those of using RT only. In the meantime, RT+transcranial Direct Current Stimulation(tDCS) and RT+Functional Electrical Stimulation(FES) could be the optimal electric stimulation schemes for restoring lower limb motor function(SMD 8.35, 95%CI [3.05, 13.34]/ SMD 5.64, 95%CI [3.68, 7.56]), improving balance (SMD 9.80, 95%CI [0.67, 20.93]/ SMD 6.54, 95%CI [3.85, 10.95]) and activities of daily living(SMD 18.95, 95%CI [0.401, 36.9]/ SMD 15.47, 95%CI [7.89, 22.75]), and the treatment effects would be even better using RT+FES+tDCS combination. Conclusion tDCS and FES superior to other electrical stimulation methods based on RT in the treatment of lower limb dysfunction after stroke.

Objective:To confirm that acupuncture applied to patients would improve the clinical curative effect and accelerate the patient's recovery by introducing the application of acupuncture in pre-operation, during operation, and post-operation.Data sources:Literature cited in this review was retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and was primarily published in English or Chinese from 2010 to 2018, with keywords of “acupuncture,” “electroacupuncture,” “perioperative period,” “sedation,” “analgesia,” and “recovery.” Relevant citations in the retrieved articles were also screened to include more data.Study selection:All retrieved literature was scrutinized, most typical articles related on perioperative acupuncture application in clinical study were reviewed.Results:Acupuncture could relieve anxiety and stress during the preoperative stage. It reduces the usage of narcotics and stress response, and maintains the respiratory stability and homeostasis during surgery. It also exerts a protective effect on vital organs, and during the postoperative stages, enhances the recovery while effectively alleviating the postoperative pain. This phenomenon prevents common postoperative discomforts such as nausea and vomiting. In addition, it might improve the patients’ long-term prognosis.Conclusions:The novel concept “perioperative acupuncture medicine” is to focus on the optimal treatment in the perioperative period of surgical patients. The review reveals the important role of acupuncture in enhancing rapid recovery of patients during the perioperative period.

The ancient medicine acupuncture was used to treat the diabetes and its complications. Our study was aimed to find out the hypoglycemic effect of Acu-TENS electrical stimulation at bilateral Zusanli (ST36) acupoint in streptozotocin (45 mg/kg/body weight/IP) induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced in male albino wistar rats with the administration of single dose of streptozotocin(45mg/kg/body weight/IP). The fasting blood glucose level, body weight, food and water intake were assessed periodically in the experimental animals and its effect was compared with conventional anti-diabetic drug (pioglitazone7.5 mg/kg/body weight). Zusanli acupoints was stimulated with 15HZ of 15MA high intensity and 5 sec pulse width for 5 minutes daily without anaesthesia for 60 days. Acupoint ST36 shows significant reduction (p≤0.01) in blood glucose level and also restored the body weight, food and water intake in treated rats and compared with anti-diabetic drug. The hypoglycemic effect of ST36 acupoint may be due stimulation of energy flow Qi to balance Yin and Yang and utilization of energy due to mild muscle twitching during stimulation.
