Effect of κ-Casein Polymorphism on Milk Composition in the Orobica Goat

Abstract: The aim of this work was to study the effects of isoelectrofocusing (IEF) milk protein variants on milk composition in the Italian Orobica goat breed, which is characterized by a rather high frequency of the κ-casein (CSN3) B IEF allele. Significant associations were found between the IEF phenotype and protein and casein percentages. A favorable effect of the CSN3 B IEF variant was found for both protein and casein percentages, with a codominance trend for the 3 phenotypes: BB > AB > AA. Depending on the selec… Show more

“…However, the B allele of j-CN was found to be significantly favourable for milk and protein yields. And for protein percentage, the B allele was reported to be to be significantly associated with milk yield and composition traits which are correlated with cheese-yielding efficiency in cattle and goat breeds (Chiatti et al 2007). In contrast to j-CN gene, b-LG gene exhibits three genotypes in many different cattle breeds (Tsiaras et al 2005;Patel and Chauhan 2008;Akyuz et al 2012).…”

“…Prinzenberg et al (2005), proposed to differentiate the nomenclature at protein level from the one used at DNA level introducing two codes (A IEF and B IEF ) corresponding to two IPs (IP=5.53 and 5.78, respectively) identified using isoelectrofocusing (IEF) method (Table 1). According to this nomenclature, among the CSN3 alleles found in our study, only the D and D' alleles are included in B IEF group, whereas A, B, G and N alleles belong to A IEF group (Table 1), which represents the less favourable variants group in terms of milk composition and technological properties (Chiatti et al, 2007).…”

“…The B, B , and H alleles all belong to the AIEF variant, which is the less favourable -casein variant in terms of milk composition and technological properties (Haenlein, 2002;Chiatti et al, 2007).…”
