Abstract:The effective-ion-charge concept of Pick and Sarma is examined with respect to the calculation of phonon frequencies of metals. It is shown that the extra charge associated with an ion because of the orthogonalization of the plane waves to the core states is cancelled by a term which results from the nonorthogonality of the single orthogonalized plane waves when the ions are displaced from their equilibrium positions.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
