EFFECTIVE COLLISION STRENGTHS FOR ELECTRON-IMPACT EXCITATION OF Fe VIII

Abstract: New extensive calculations are reported for electron collision strengths, rate coefficients, and transition probabilities for the astrophysically important lines of Fe viii. The collision strengths have been calculated in the close-coupling approximation using the B-spline Breit-Pauli R-matrix method. The multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method with term-dependent non-orthogonal orbitals is employed for an accurate representation of the target wave functions. The close-coupling expansion includes 102 fine-struc… Show more

“…It is indeed true (see below for a detailed comparison) that energies are closer to the experimental ones, compared to previous calculations. However, close inspection of Table 4 in Tayal & Zatsarinny (2011) shows that their oscillator strengths for a few transitions are significantly different than those of the large structure calculations (Zeng et al 2003;Del Zanna 2009b), in particular for the 197.368 Å, observed by Hinode EIS.…”

“…3.1). Table 2 lists the target energies obtained from the present target, with (E TEC ) and without TECs (E t ) for the lowest 50 levels (which produce the strongest transitions for this ion), compared to the experimental level energies E exp (from Del Zanna 2009b), those of Tayal & Zatsarinny (2011;E TZ11 ), of the benchmark structure calculation of Del Zanna (2009b; E D09 ), and those of the Griffin et al (2000) scattering target (E G00 ). Table 2 also gives the level mixing obtained from the present target with TECs.…”

“…have been performed by Tayal &Zatsarinny (2011) andDel Zanna (2009). For simplicity, we will quote the lifetimes derived from the calculations of Del Zanna (2009), which are tabulated in the CHIANTI atomic database (Landi et al 2013 In order to estimate the metastable fraction in the ion beam, we have used the procedure described by Lestinsky et al (2012) to evolve the level populations in time, based on the radiative transition rates.…”
