Effective dose and risk assessment from computed tomography of the maxillofacial complex.

Abstract: The effective dose from computed tomography of the maxillofacial complex has been estimated and used for an assessment of risk. For each scan sequence 64 TLDs were placed in 27 selected sites in the upper portion of a tissue-equivalent human phantom to record the equivalent dose in radiosensitive organs/tissues. Equivalent doses ranged from 0.11 mSv (bone marrow, maxillary scan) to 20 mSv (salivary glands, mandibular scan). By the use of a calculation that included the salivary glands as part of the remainder,… Show more

“…The aforementioned advantages of MSCT technology, namely the accurately-dimensioned representation of anatomical structures free of overlapping images, are accompanied by relatively high levels of radiation exposure for the patient [13,17,18,24]. The effective amount of radiation using the Somatom 64® multi-line CT technique depends on the volume to be scanned (FOV = field of view) and the examination parameters selected [29].…”

“…This is why we chose the "low dose" setting for the examinations in this study, whereby we were able to significantly reduce the radiation exposure level without sacrificing any diagnosis-relevant loss in image information and quality [2,17]. We could reduce radiation exposure by a further 38% by using the manufacturer's "CARE Dose4D" program [30].…”

“…In addition, the dose to the patient is increased compared with panoramic imaging. 11 However, the panoramic imaging system is a reasonable modality in terms of image quality, patient dose and cost for most dental practices. Recently, several manufacturers and researchers of panoramic imaging modalities have adopted digital imaging sensors instead of a film-screen detector, such as a two-dimensional sensor with a slit, a linear sensor and a strip two-dimensional sensor.…”
