Effective microbes (EM) and their potential on mushroom commercialization in Malaysia

Abstract: The mushroom cultivation industry in Malaysia is one of the fastest growing agricultural sectors due to its high return value and low production cost. With the Malaysian government forecasting an RM300 million worth of mushroom exporting by 2020, demand for high-quality mushrooms would rise. Commercially grown mushrooms in Malaysia include Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus djamor, Pleurotus eryngii, and Schizophyllum commune. The mushroom cultivating technique is critical to achieving large yields. More mushrooms… Show more

“…Molecular approaches used to identify mushrooms include matrixassisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry, rapid amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), internal transcribed spacer-restriction fragment length polymorphism (ITS-RFLP) and rDNA-ITS region sequence analysis [6]. Nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA), particularly the ITS section, is excellent for understanding mushroom genetics because ITS sections are highly conserved yet vary across species and are easy to amplify from modest amounts of DNA [7].…”
