Effective plans for hospital system response to earthquake emergencies

Abstract: Hospital systems play a critical role in treating injuries during disaster emergency responses. Simultaneously, natural disasters hinder their ability to operate at full capacity. Thus, cities must develop strategies that enable hospitals' effective disaster operations. Here, we present a methodology to evaluate emergency response based on a model that assesses the loss of hospital functions and quantifies multiseverity injuries as a result of earthquake damage. The proposed methodology can design effective pl… Show more

“…The intra-event residuals are simulated with the procedure proposed by Markhvida et al (2018). Markhvida et al (2018)'s procedure is not necessarily appropriate for all areas of the world, but it has been applied in different regions, such as China (You et al, 2021) and Chile (Ceferino et al, 2020). The magnitude, faulting characteristics (e.g., dip, rake angles), and source-tosite distance measures are evaluated on a rupture-by-rupture case.…”

Health systems are the main pillars of disaster management, and hospitals are at the core of health systems in the treatment of casualties (Ceferino et al, 2020). Disasters often affect various aspects of health systems and disrupt the provision of hospital care (Abolghasem Gorgi et al, 2017).

“…The implementation of these systems has led to the conversion of hospitals into specific COVID-19 structures, highlighting a good degree of resilience of healthcare facilities. The identification of these parameters and risk scenarios allows the creation of models that can facilitate the reconfiguration for disaster-resilient health infrastructure, also applicable to other types of health emergencies (i.e., earthquakes, floods, other infectious outbreaks) [55,56].…”
