“…Vaccination prevents infections by inducing and/or enhancing protective immunity. Vaccination is particularly important in AIIRD patients, potentially translating into a lower rate of hospital admissions due to infections, emergency room visits and the rate of invasive infectious diseases 11. Yet, the AIIRD population universally suffers from a suboptimal uptake of vaccinations,12–19 in part due to a low rate of referral for vaccination by rheumatologists20 and other treating physicians,21 indicating that further interventions are needed to raise the awareness for vaccination among the rheumatology community and involved healthcare professionals.…”

“…Vaccination is known to reduce rates of hospital admissions due to infections, emergency room visits, and the rate of invasive infectious diseases in patients with autoimmune disease. 7 However, it has been extensively demonstrated that anti-CD 20 therapy (both rituximab and ocrelizumab) is associated with impaired vaccine response. This was first demonstrated in patients with neuromyelitis optica on rituximab therapy, with reduction in protective antibody titer and seroconversion rate (37.5% vs. 75.0% healthy controls) post-H1N1 influenza A vaccination.…”
