Effectiveness of a vaccination program against mumps in Ukraine

Abstract: Medical records and incidence data were analyzed retrospectively to document the epidemiology, clinical features, and outcomes of mumps in relation to vaccination status in the Lviv province of Ukraine over a 7.5-year period, beginning in 2000, when a second dose of mumps vaccine was introduced. Lviv, 1 of 27 provinces in western Ukraine, with a land area of 21,833 km(2), had a total population of about 2,555,834 in 2006. The initial success of the second dose introduction in 2000 in Ukraine was limited by a l… Show more

“…Seasonal variation in the incidence of mumps has been reported in different areas. Of these, a seasonal pattern has been detected in the USA, with significant peaks in April [4] ; more cases occur in winter and spring than in summer and autumn in the Ukraine [5] ; frequency is higher in winter and spring with epidemic peaks in Jordan [6] ; and incidence is highest in the spring, next highest in autumn, and lowest in summer in Taiwan [7]. The seasonality of the disease suggests that weather factors might play an important role in its incidence and indicates the possibility of multiple functional pathways.…”

“…[ 4 ] In Ukraine, most cases of mumps occur in winter and spring. [ 36 ] Our results showed a seasonal pattern of mumps infection with a peak occurrence in the spring and summer months. Our findings were similar to those of previous studies in China, [ 37 , 38 ] but differed from those in Jordan.…”

“…While the parotid glands are the most commonly affected organ, mumps may also affect several other organs, such as the testes, central nervous system, pancreas, and articulars [11]. The incidence of mumps diminished dramatically in the past 25 years after the introduction of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine in the world [12].…”
