Effectiveness of using a vibrating device in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Objective: The aim of current systematic review was to evaluate the efficiency of the vibrating devices in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement. Methods: A systemic unrestricted search was done in three electronic databases up to July 2018. A manual search was also performed. Eligibility criteria included Randomized clinical trials (RCTs), quasi randomized clinical trials and prospective controlled trials (CCTs) comparing the rate of the tooth movement with and witho… Show more

“…Table IV Misleading reporting like "The results are significant but the clinical significance of these changes is still questionable", 13 misleading Interpretation like "There is limited available evidence…… Although the current study indicates that this method can hasten the treatment duration by 2.2-3 fold", 14 misleading extrapolation like "According to the low certainty of evidence about the topic, providing a definite conclusion is not possible, however, applying I-PRF seems to be efficient in accelerating the orthodontic tooth movement (OTM)", 15 were most often seen in the related literature.…”

“…It has been claimed that both types can reduce orthodontic treatment duration, a result that could reduce an important side effect of the lengthy orthodontic treatment, that is OIIRR. However, a recently published systematic review found no evidence that vibrating appliances are effective in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement 45 . Although mechanical vibration devices are available in the market for more than ten years, only two published studies assessed their effects on OIIRR.…”

“…Zu dieser Thematik wurden zwar insgesamt 84 Studien zusammengetragen, von denen jedoch nur 3 für die Metaanalyse verwendet werden konnten. Das Ergebnis der Auswertungen war, dass es keine Belege dafür gibt, dass vibrierende Apparaturen die kieferorthopädische Zahnbewegung beschleunigen könnten [5].…”
