Effects in man of single and combined oral doses of reserpine, iproniazid, and D‐lysergic acid diethylamide

Abstract: The use of d‐lysergic acid diethylamide, LSD, as a reference standard for the evaluation of psychopathologic symptoms was tested. A group of healthy male volunteers took weekly doses of LSD in order to become familiar with the temporary mental changes induced by the drug. The subjects were able to identify three dose levels of LSD and to differentiate LSD from placebo and other drugs. A standard curve of the responses to LSD could be constructed for these subjects. A combination of reserpine plus iproniazid wa… Show more

“…Pretreatment with nialamide, a different MAOI, daily for 3 weeks to reach a total dose of 3500 mg also blocked the effects of LSD and patients tolerated very high doses of LSD at 500 μg without any clinical or psychotic symptoms (Grof & Dytrych, 1965). In contrast, iproniazid at 100 mg, when taken together with varying doses of LSD, did not alter any physical or subjective effects of LSD (DeMaar et al, 1960).…”

“…The first three listed antidepressants attenuated or blocked the effects of LSD Grof & Dytrych, 1965;Resnick et al, 1964). In contrast, the latter, 43 iproniazid, did not alter the subjective or physical effects of LSD (DeMaar et al, 1960).…”

“…The first three listed antidepressants attenuated or blocked the effects of LSD Grof and Dytrych, 1965;Resnick et al, 1964). By contrast, the latter, iproniazid, did not alter the subjective or physical effects of LSD (DeMaar et al, 1960). However, iproniazid was also used in the experiments with DMT where it was shown to reduce the effects of DMT (Sai Halasz, 1963).…”

“…"76 It is now believed that pharmacologic tests such as potentiation of amine effects ( in animals) or the "tryptophan intoxication syndrome" (in man) are the only valid measures of drug action inhibiting brain monoamine oxidase." '3 De Maar and colleagues 84 undertook a well-controlled pharmacologic study in man with the purpose of determining the relation of iproniazid and reserpine effects to those elicited by lysergic acid diethylamide. Two principal findings emerged: subjects clearly discriminate between effects of lysergic acid diethylamide on the one hand and those of combined reserpine and iproniazid administration on the other; and addition of either reserpine or iproniazid to lysergic acid diethylamide does not alter the effects of the latter drug.…”
