Effects of a Nonionic Surfactant (C14–15ae-7) on Aquatic Invertebrates in Outdoor Stream Mesocosms

Abstract: Responses of aquatic invertebrates to a C 14-15 linear alcohol ethoxylate (LAE) nonionic surfactant with an average of seven ethylene oxide units per mole of alcohol were evaluated in outdoor stream mesocosms. Two experiments were carried out to evaluate responses of aquatic invertebrates to 28-and 30-d exposures in eight stream mesocosms. Changes in benthic invertebrate densities and in invertebrate drift were monitored during pretreatment, treatment, and posttreatment periods. In Experiment 1, mean measured … Show more

“…Indirect effects on fish growth resulting from mortality of zooplankton and macroinvertebrates has been demonstrated in numerous mesocosm studies with insecticides [11] but not with surfactants. Our own studies and those of Gillespie et al [14] show that there was no observed effect of the surfactant on the zooplankton. Moreover, similar densities of zooplankton in the upstream mixing chambers and the downstream pools show that these forage organisms were continually renewed.…”

“…After equilibrating flows of water and surfactant into the exposure chambers but before introducing fish, water samples were collected from each exposure concentration. Samples were preserved with 1% formalin and shipped to Shell Development Company for C [14][15] AE-7 analysis. The surfactant was isolated from water samples using 90-mm-diameter Empore (3M) polystyrenedivinylbenzene solid phase extraction (SPE) disks.…”
