Soil loss (SL) and its related sedimentation in mountainous areas affect the lifetime and functionality of dams. Darbandikhan Lake is one example of a dam lake in the Zagros region that was filled in late 1961. Since then, the lake has received a considerable amount of sediments from the upstream area of the basin. Interestingly, a series of dams have been constructed (13 dams), leading to a change in the sedimentation rate arriving at the main reservoir. This motivated us to evaluate a different combination of equations to estimate the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR), and Reservoir Sedimentation (RSed). Sets of Digital Elevation Model (DEM) gathered by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), Harmonized World Soil Database (HWSD), AQUA eMODIS NDVI V6 data, in situ surveys by echo-sounding bathymetry, and other ancillary data were employed for this purpose. In this research, to estimate the RSed, five models of the SDR and the two most sensitive factors affecting soil-loss estimation were tested (i.e., rainfall erosivity (R) and cover management factor (C)) to propose a proper RUSLE-SDR model suitable for RSed modeling in mountainous areas. Thereafter, the proper RSed using field measurement of the bathymetric survey in Darbandikhan Lake Basin (DLB) was validated. The results show that six of the ninety scenarios tested have errors <20%. The best scenario out of the ninety is Scenario #18, which has an error of <1%, and its RSed is 0.46458 km3·yr−1. Moreover, this study advises using the Modified Fournier index (MIF) equations to estimate the R factor. Avoiding the combination of the Index of Connectivity (IC) model for calculating SDR and land cover for calculating the C factor to obtain better estimates is highly recommended.

In this study, field measurement, spatial information, and HEC-RAS modeling were used to determine changes in the amount and pattern of flow in a waterway due to the construction of check dams. The location map of the structures and their upstream area was prepared in the GIS environment. The flow rate with different return periods was calculated from empirical methods. To simulate the changes in the flow pattern, the HEC-RAS model was calibrated. Flows and corresponding water levels were measured and data at 70% and 30% ratios were used for calibration and validation, respectively. The accuracy of the hydrological model in predicting water elevation was assessed using statistical indicators. The effect of check dams on the flow pattern and time in different discharges was quantitatively calculated and compared with the conditions before construction. The simulation results by HEC-RAS model showed a high correlation between observed and calculated values of flow and water level in the waterway (R2 = 0.96 and RMSE = 0.029). In most structures, the flow velocity increased after passing the structures. In a 2-yr flood, the flow time increased by 82.8 minutes due to the check dams. This time is lower in floods with higher return periods.

As in the rest of the world, the impact of climate change is clearly felt in Turkey, while the effects of global warming, drought and flood-induced disasters continue to increase day by day. At the same time, water consumption is crucial for the survival of people. Efficient water use and conservation, facilitated by water resources management, should be recognized as a pressing contemporary concern. Recently, floods that cause a great deal of damage have started to occur frequently in Turkey. A possible flood that may occur in the demolition of Gökçe Dam has been a matter of curiosity. This dam is the most important water source for Yalova province and has been in service for a long time. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the flood risk situations of settlements in case of a possible Gökçe Dam failure or basin flooding. Additionally, the study aims to estimate the damages that may occur in houses of flooded areas. Piping and overtopping methods were used in HEC-RAS program to create flood maps, and the Van Eck and Kok damage curves were used to assess the damages. While water level varies between 0-1 meters in the most affected buildings in the overtopping method, this level is 2-3 meters in the piping method. The damage to buildings with a water level of 4 meters and above is quite high in the piping method, and it has been observed that greater damage may occur for lower water levels in the overtopping method. The total damage and number of affected buildings are higher in the piping method. Accordingly, a possible Gökçe dam failure would cause significant losses in both methods, especially in the piping method.
